Perfection leads to imperfection. Pt1

How many times you have tried to do something but the simple fact of thinking about getting it perfect or perfectly do it or execution in the most perfect way just freezes what you are trying to achieve.

The same happens when you are trying to communicate, specifically in english.

You are trying to get the perfect exact word out and this leads to have an imperfect communication. Yes, you are trying to get your spanish idea in english so you most likely translate and the moment you don’t remember the exact word your mind goes blank, you start saying “ee”, “este, you can’t complete your sentence, you stay quiet and basically you want to run and hide from that moment.

Well, there is something I work with my students that has to do with increasing your confidence with certain things and one of them is the use of synonyms.

And when I say synonyms is not for you to learn a list of 20000000 words to know the synonyms of every single word, but rather have ALTERNATIVES to what you want to say.

Let me give you an example:

Imagine you are having a casual chat with someone about your reference sources and you wanna say

“bueno mi fuente principal, son libros y artículos que son publicados por la universidad…”

so you go like this…

“well my main sources are books and articles…..” y en ese bendito momento olvidaste cómo decir “publicados” en inglés, entras en pánico, te quedas en blanco y no sabes qué decir.

DON’T PANIC, think of ALTERNATIVES here are some examples.

If we focus on the translation, the most accurate word would be “published”
“well my main sources are books and articles published by the university”

What are the alternatives? think on what published is so we can say:
“presented | elaborated | created | released | done”

You see?, we went from published to use the word done as an alternative and instead of frustrating in the moment for not remembering the word you wanted to say and avoiding the frustration in the moment.

So please, don’t let perfection trick you and make you an imperfect communicator. Feel confident, trust yourself and practice developing the agility for those alternatives whenever you need them.
