It’s not your english, it’s your emotions.
I wanna start off by sharing this hilarious reel a dear student shared with me, thanks Juan!.
This reel clearly portrays what we all go through when being in the actual scenario of speaking in english and not understanding a single thing.
Keep calm, if this has ever happened to you, you are not alone, I know that horrible sensation of knowing that YOU KNOW english but ordering at the restaurant or understanding the cashier turns to be your worst nightmare.
These situations DO NOT, read it again, DO NOT mean you don’t know english or that you are not fluent or so. This has to do with other skills and abilities to work on like emotional control, nervous control or hearing acuity.
I know, I know, you are now going to ask me “Professor Pablo how the F*** am I going to work or improve that?” Well, that’s the thing, there is no secret formula, hack or overnight activity. It requires practice, discipline and learning to understand yourself.
Everytime to face a situation like this you gotta be completely aware and conscious of the situation so you can actually pay proper attention to your sorrounding, and get your brain ready ahead of any speech your may hear.
There are of course other activities to enhance these skills for example forcing yourself to listen certain audios at a higher speed, start with 1.25, then 1.50 and so. Don’t worry if you can’t get anything at the begining, remember that practice makes perfect.
Vocabulary, Phrases and Tools
