How to interest people?
Out of the blue | Speak your confidence

Hello Hello Conlanger, gracias a los y las que preguntaron por el newsletter y los que me siguen en instagram sabrán que les comenté que estuve malo la semana pasada y mi hijo también entonces no pude mandarles Newsletter, pero aquí me tienen ya de vuelta para así como el coach en el gym te dice “dame otra” y ya estás por reventar, en la comunicación y práctica del inglés es igual. Necesitamos alguien forzándonos y empujándonos a llegar al siguiente nivel. Let me be that coach!

How to interest people
This week I read chapter 6 of “How to win friends and influence people” by Dale Carnegie in which he presents as the title says a simple, yet powerful thing you can do to be interesting to others.
Throughout this chapter he shares a story about a Boy Scout who wanted the president of a huge corporation to pay for a trip to Europe and when he got to his office instead of delving into asking for the assistance and support he heard that this man had framed a one million dollars check and had it in his office so the first thing he did was asking him about the check the man shared with the boy scout all the story and background, they talked for a while and at some point the president said “Oh by the way, what was it you wanted to see me aboout?” and then he told him about the trip and so which to his suprise the man didn’t only authorized the requested but more.
The takeaway is that you have to talk about what the other person likes we tend to talk about ourselves first and it’s not wrong yet we underestimate the power that lies on truly listening and talk about what the other person likes or interests.
The 5th principle as Dale states it is “Talk in terms of the other person’s interests.” You have no idea how much of a change you will see in a person being interested in you by actually talking about what the other person likes and is interested in, instead of something about you or your interests or likings.
De manera personal lo aplique en una reciente situación. Una amiga me pidió que si podía hablar con uno de sus clientes porque era hablarle en inglés y como había ocurrido un malentendido en un pedido pues tenía miedo de enfrentar al cliente por el posible enojo y tener que hacerlo en inglés. Entonces escuché a mi amiga y enlisté cuáles eran sus objetivos a lograr en la llamada y qué era la idea con la que querían que se quedara el cliente. Al llamarle al cliente en lugar de empezar directo con las razones del malentendido y la parte “defensiva” tras saludarlo comencé la conversación con una simple pregunta “Mr. what exactly is your concern?” and I let him speak, talk, share with me his concerns and I actively listened, meaning I nodded (voiced) and gave him cues about my understanding. After I listened I apologized and then I focused on his concerns alligning them with my friend’s request and let me tell you something there was no awkwardness at any moment, he didnt get angry nor upset he was actually thankful for the solution so I just proved Dale’s principle. It works. Hold your horses, don’t let your impulse talk for yourself about yourself first ask others, listen, engange, then talk.
Let me know what you think!
Vocabulary, Phrases and Tools
Idiom: “Out of the blue” - is an idiomatic expression that means something happens unexpectedly or without warning, seemingly coming from nowhere.
"Sarah received a job offer out of the blue, and she was thrilled because she hadn't been actively searching for employment."
You wanna know a random fact? (yes I didn’t add the Do at the beginning because that’s soometimes how you will hear the people speaking)
There is an english word that has a world guiness record of the word with the most amount of meanings.
The word “SET” has a total of 430 meanings in the dictionary, HOW, well thanks to the phrasal verbs, remember that a verb + preposition make a new word so even though words are separated they make a new single word.
Set up , Set down, Set in, Set out, Setup etc….
