Hello, Hello, sorry for getting you this edition a little bit late. I hope your week has been a productive one.

I think it’s important that we understand why there are certain guidelines and “rules” of behavior at work and how some of these translate outside work.

_{Business etiquette: set of professional behaviors, customs, and protocols that are expected and valued in a business environment.}

Of course the idea is for the companies to have a standard between their employees to ensure the interactions are appropiate.

Business etiquette involves many areas such as communication, appearance, punctuality, respect, and social interactions.

Here are a couple examples of bad business etiquette vs good business etiquette:

Bad Business Etiquette:

Alex: We need to talk about the project. Can you meet me now?
Emily: Um, I guess so.

Good Business Etiquette:

Alex: I wanted to discuss the progress we've made on the project. Are you available for a meeting later this afternoon?

Emily: Absolutely, Alex. I appreciate you scheduling it in advance. What time works best for you?

Bad Business Etiquette:

Alex: Yeah, thanks for doing your part.

Emily: No problem.

Good Business Etiquette:

Alex: I wanted to express my appreciation for your hard work on this project, Emily. Your dedication and contributions have been instrumental in its success.

Emily: Thank you, Alex. I'm glad I could contribute.

The reason to discuss this topic was due to the following news where a tourist decided to crave his and his girlfriend’s name in the wall of the colosseum

And the question to analyze here was, if you happen to have to interview this guy for a position in your team, Would you hire him?

Here is where coherence between our actions impact every aspect in our lives.

Vocabulary and Phrases

This week, some of the words we practiced were:

• In spite of - A pesar de
  In spite of the weather, they decided to have a picnic

• Despite - A pesar de ( more formal than in spite of but used the same)
  Despite raining heavily, they went out for a walk.

• Whereas - Mientras que (contrasting idea)
  The sun was shining brightly, whereas yesterday it had been raining all day

• Although - Aunque
  Although it was late, they decided to continue the meeting.

A useful phrase for this week is:

Keep me in the loop - Refering to “mantenme al tanto”

Communication Tool

Mental agility is one of the side skills that I help my students develop because more than learning more words or phrases by hard, being able to process information, formulate ideas and structure faster is more important.

A simple activity that I use with my students is the following:
You have 20 seconds to say as most synonyms as you can of the following list:

• Create

• Big

• Fast

• Happy

• Project

• Word

The idea is to understand that is not about looking for exact synonyms of each word but rather understand which word may be useful according to your context for example, for the word BIG not necessarly you have to think about size, what about if you relate it to importance, to amount and so.
